The Story Behind Heart Work for You |
|
| Several years ago I went on a vision quest to Mount Shasta in California. It was an experience that changed my life. | |
| Before the retreat I had been working as a project manager in computing operations. I was feeling burnt out and dissatisfied with this job. As a result of my quest, I returned home with a new resolve to change jobs. | |
| A few days after I returned to work I realized that people were getting paid to design and build web sites. I enjoyed surfing the web and was beginning to see its almost limitless potential. I had previously built a personal web site that was primarily designed to help my friends and family get started using the internet. Designing and building the site was so much fun that I decided that doing web work professionally would be an ideal direction for me to pursue. | |
| When I told my boss that I was looking for a new job doing web design work, I expected to transfer out of his work group in the near future. Instead, he told me that our organization's webmaster had just left, leaving no one to maintain our web site. He asked me if I would be interested in taking over the job. By the end of the day I was the organization's new webmaster, a role that I have continued in to this day. | |
| One of the things I love about working on the web is that it uses many of my different skills. My people skills are invaluable in working with my clients to understand their requirements and figure out how to best satisfy them. My background in computer programming gives me a good foundation for working with hypertext markup language (HTML). My writing and editing skills help me in the composition of web page content. And my skill in graphic arts and as a photographer serves me well in doing brochures, business sets, and web page design and layout. | |
| Another piece of my personal puzzle fell into place when I read a book called The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz. The lessons of this book have become my guiding principles, both in my business and my personal life. The four agreements are: | |
| 1. Be impeccable with your word. | |
| 2. Don't take anything personally. | |
| 3. Don't make assumptions. | |
| 4. Always do your best. | |
| Living up to these agreements isn't easy. However, they do set a good benchmark and give me something to strive for as I move forward in life. | |
| Heart Work for You is my way of bringing together some of the diverse elements of my life: my artistic skills, my photography, and my web work. I hope the services you find on this site are useful to you both in your business and your personal life. | |
